Hello!

My name is Jacob Conrad, and I am from Aurora, Illinois. I am in my junior year at Marquette University where I am studying Mechanical Engineering and pursuing a minor in mathematics. At Marquette, I work in the Omron Advanced Automations Lab. I am primarily focused on designing and implementing physical systems through hands on development and testing. I am especially interested in integrating mechanical design with control systems, allowing me to take initial designs to functioning automated solutions.

PID-Controlled Self-Heating Coffee Mug Prototype

I developed a prototype self-heating coffee mug using a closed-loop temperature control system. The design utilized a thermistor in a voltage-divider circuit to continuously monitor liquid temperature and provide real-time feedback to a PID (Proportional–Integral–Derivative) controller implemented in MATLAB. The controller compared the measured temperature to a user-defined setpoint and calculated the temperature error, dynamically adjusting heater power through a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal sent to the Arduino. By tuning the proportional, integral, and derivative gains, the system maintained a stable target temperature while minimizing overshoot and steady-state error.
